Tamarindo and Flamingo Restaurants
Lets be honest, Costa Rica has a lot to offer. Amazing sailing, great surf, kind people….but food is not on the top of the list of why people visit Costa Rica. The typical food, is healthy, yet I find it bland. The Casado is the most typical plate which consists of rice, beans, a salad, friend plantain and a protein (chicken, beef, pork or fish). I am from New Mexico, where we live for our food, so it is a bit hard to impress me with overcooked and under seasoned meat.
However, there are some gems around here. We created a short list of Tamarindo and Flamingo Restaurants and we recommend and we have added some of the smaller villages too.
Surf Box- Owned by our dear friends, Dan and Natasha, this place is hip, cool (actually has AC), healthy and so delicious. We had been encouraging her for years to open a restaurant, because she loves to cook and is very good at it. We are lucky that she did. Open daily for breakfast and lunch.
A lo’Nico-This is a low key place, with great food and kind owners. The casados here are some of the best in the country. So, if you are looking for some typical food, stop by here. 🙂
Seasons-When we have a special occasion or just want a really nice dinner, Seasons is ofter our first choice. The chef/owner is there constantly ensuring that the food is alway top notch and the service is as expected.
Patagonia-For great ambience, affordable prices and good quality food, I recommend Patagonia. Typical Argentinian food, lots of great meat dishes, but some of my favorite plates are their vegetarian options. The butternut squash dish is divine! I highly recommend making a reservation as they are often times full.
Baulas Pizza-This is a great place to take the family. There is a playground for the kids and the ambience is family friendly and very relaxed. They open at 5 and mostly just serve delicious, Italian style pizza.
Lolas – Don’t leave Avellanas without eating at Lolas! Its a classic on its own, the setting, the food, the great owners Don and Christy. You can spend the day there enjoying the beach and the Lolajito!
Playa Negra Restaurants
Divina-Playa Negra is a bit of a drive from us, but doing to dine and Divina is always worth it. Probably with the best restaurants in Costa Rica. The french owners and chef have really created something special here. It is a bit expensive, but worth every penny.
Sailing Center- This is a great place to spend the afternoon. You can rent kayaks and hobie cats, have a drink and watch the sunset and also grab a bite to eat.
El Castillo- A local favorite. Harlan the owner has created a delicious and varied menu here. Affordable prices and stiff drinks.
Papaya- At the Conchal hotel, this little restaurant offers an international menu and quiet bar. Its really tucked away so you really have to know how to get there.
Il Forno-This is our favorite pizza place in the county. Great, thin crust pizzas and a nice palapa dinning area. You can call ahead and take home as well.
We hope this helps you while visiting Costa Rica. If you have a bad experience with any of these restaurants please let us know. And remember your best meal might come from our very own Serendipity Charters (our menu)!
